CULTURE OF EL HIERRO

Before the arrival of Europeans, Сanary islands were inhabited by local native folk - gouache tribes. The Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians and Arabs had visited the island, but did not settle. In the 15th century, the island was colonized by the Spanish people, and then shared they it with the Portuguese, French and local residents.

Bimbaches, to the inhabitants of El Hierro from gouache tribes, were not completely exterminated during the colonization, and now their traces can be found all over the island. They had their own communication system. For example, in the town of Hulan, there is a cave, covered with petroglyphs. Here was an old and rather large bimbache settlement. Traces of primitive stone buildings are found all over El Hierro, so sometimes an interesting ancient building can be found just by walking through the forest.

In addition to the tracks of bimbache tribes, two hundred meters from the settlement there is an interesting ethnographic museum. There is also a langarium where you can learn about the life cycle of the unique giant El Hierro lizards.

On the territory of the island, there are quite a lot of interesting objects surrounded by myths and legends.

Therefore, Garoé tree, whose leafs and branches used to give the local people water before the arrival of the Spanish colonizers, still grows somewhere in the local forest.

Some divers are still searching for Saint Brendan's Island, which appears and disappears in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and is full of pirate treasures. Of course, it is no more than a beautiful legend, but El Hierro was located at the crossroads of the marine paths to America and pirate ships were no doubt frequent visitors to the secluded place.

Valverde, the capital of El Hierro, was built in the 15th century, and since then many old buildings have been preserved here. For example, on the streets of the capital you can see the beautiful town hall in the traditional Canarian style; visit the church of Santa Maria de la Concepcio and the chapel of the Holy Virgin.

El Hierro has many holidays, mostly religious.

Every four years, a colorful procession takes place in honor of the appearance of the Virgin Mary on September 24 from the temple in La Deesa forest to the capital.

Festivals take an important role in the holidays in honor of St. Salvador and St. Lorenzo in August and St. Simon in October.

Several times a year, large fairs happen on the island.

In addition, underwater photography, classical and rock music festivals, and open-water swimming competitions are held here every year.
